In Hamburg, for all times the location of international trade and the largest European seaport behind Rotterdam, Hans. G.E. Sievers founded an agency called Sievers & Sievers for the import of fishmeal from South America in 1932. The company opened up the German market and soon thereafter the neighbouring European markets of the animal feed industry.

The business prospers and during the following decades the offer of animal proteins is continually expanded. Because of this market offensive the company suceed in winning customers from other sectors, such as from the gelatine and fertiliser industry.

In 1949 it becomes necessary to found a new company due to the increasing business volume. The business Hans G.E. Sievers (GmbH & Co.), with registered office at Ballindamm in Hamburg, achieves international recognition because of its imports from many regions throughout the world.

In 1965 Sievers is looking for support and finds a reliable partner in Günter Wörtmann who becomes shareholder and managing director in 1969. More than 30 years later the founder of the company leaves a company which enjoys a worldwide reputation.

In 1996 Günter Wörtmann takes over the entire company and together with his son Thomas decide to modernise the corporate organisation as well as to further expand the activities.

Since 1998 Thomas Wörtmann as shareholder and managing director promotes the expansion and the further development of the company.


Today the emphasis of the business is the marketing of natural raw materials for the production of feed & pet food. Furthermore the pharmaceutical, gelatine, collagen and fertiliser industries are important customers. The company is also established in the sector of finished products for the pet area and distributes natural chewing products as well as snacks for dogs.


Globalisation and international partnerships have been the living practise for decades. Part of the core competence are the worldwide logistics, the protection from currency risks as well as the dealing with import regulations which are continually becoming more and more complex. Only with the assumption of these tasks does the company make the products marketable.

Since 2004 the company has been controlling selected raw materials by means of the quality management system GMP B2. The implementation of certified organic raw materials is a topic of the future.

Today the company under the trade name HAGES can look back onto a company history of more than 85 years. The basic philosophy of long-term partnerships, based on transparency, will continue to be the intention for good business relationships.
